The arrival of gifts at Mena Camp from home, like money from Australian Patriotic
Funds (below), were always well received - some of the men of the 7th Battery wrote
'thank you' notes back to the Brisbane newspapers for publication, like the above
published in The Queenslander on the 27th February 1915.
Mena Camp
Wednesday
January 27 1915
Major Hughes
told us today that there was 35 pounds coming to us from some Patridock Fund and
he wanted to know what was to be done with it.
He suggested that is should go towards a field cooker and all those that
were in favour to prove so the majority approved of it so that was carried. Then he told us that all presents going to
Australia from troops would go duty free, leave is stopped tonight owing to a
big procession in Cairo on the anniversary of the prophet Mulei El. Elhamid and
the natives are a bit saucy on a day like this so if any of our chaps got a bit
drunk and started to throw off they would get into trouble. Pay today and when I went in for mine I was
told I couldn’t draw any till they had further notice from the bank so I got a
few bob that was oweng to me from some of my cobbers.
Wednesday 27th January.
Stayed in camp today to rest horses. Very lucky we
did. Terribly dusty day. With Col Hobbs inspected gun emplacements made during
the previous night. Mapped out scheme for tomorrows work. Rumoured that a night
turn out was to be expected, it did not eventuate however. Feast of the Prophet
in Cairo.
