Mena Camp
Wednesday
January 13 1915
Out
manouvering and I was No 1; was a bit dusty but one wants practice to make
perfect. My horse went lame and had to
get the Sgts. Watered our horses at a
well in a palm plantation in the Nile Valley.
Got some mail today, one letter from Mater dated Dec. 12 1914. One from Flo dated Dec. 13.
A view of the Mena House Hotel, with the Great Pyramids of Giza
in the background. The offices
adjoining the back of the hotel were
used by the 1st Divisional
Headquarters from late 1914 to 1915,
where Col. Rosenthal enjoyed tea with Col. Hobbs (referred to below).
Wednesday 13th January
Left for training ground at 8AM, returned to camp
3.30PM. Provided gun and carriage for funeral of Infantry Sergeant. Received letters
from Nell and Chris dated 13th and 12th December respectively. Good training
done on area.
Col Hobbs invited the Adjutant and myself to
afternoon tea at his Head Quarters, also Col Johnstone & Christian and
their respective adjutants.
Mrs Hobbs, Miss Hobbs, Mrs
Christian, Mrs NewMarch and Mrs Anderson were present.
Think the sun ‘got me" this afternoon. I feel
very seedy.
