Gulf of Aden
Tuesday November 24 1914
We came in sight of the Arabian
coast today but it was a good way off.
We could just see a faint outline of the mountains there but we will
reach Aden tonight or tomorrow morning early.
The gulf is just like a sheet of glass.
This morning early one has a job to tell the difference between the sky and
water it is so smooth. While exercising
the horses I came to one that had all the others bluffed so I got it on a long
rope and the corporal got behind it with a broom handle and this way we got it
to lead round alright til the third round then it made a final rush at the
doorway and bumped its head on a wind pipe and riped it head nearly off. We had to get it stitched up.
Tuesday 24th November
Today’s run 290 miles. Position at noon 12°57’N, 48°19’E.
Was finally inoculated for typhoid, together with a number of officers. All
units at work including Physical exercises. Coaling nearing Completion. Very
hot day. Numbers of flying fish again seen also porpoises. An Arab Dhow passed
us in early morning in full sail and made a very pretty sight. Fleet slowed
down a little so as to reach Aden not before daylight tomorrow.
