"LITTLE STRANGERS" IN EGYPT.
"While the Australian Expeditionary Force was on the voyage to the seat of war one of the mares of the Queensland section dropped a foal at sea. As this interesting event happened on the day that H.M.A.S. Sydney set off in chase of the German raider Emden the foal was formally christened Sydney Emden. Soon after landing in Egypt another little stranger arrived in the Queensland lines, and this was named Queensland and forthwith was installed as a regimental pet. Its photograph appears on page 27. The tall soldier standing beside it is Sergeant Ken Stewart, of No. 7 Battery, son of Mr. A.B . Stewart, of Thompson Estate, Brisbane." Published in The Queenslander on the 27th March, 1915.

Went out with Colonel and Staff to make Artillery
reconnaissance of Country west of camp for Divisional exercise. I provided an
officers patrol in addition. Rode my new horse, he is quite good. In the
afternoon I made a reconnaissance with battery Commanders. Decided on positions
for guns etc.
