Mena Camp
Monday December 14 1914
Got leave tonight went into Cairo
by tram first class it cost us 2 P.T. (that is 5d) every thing has gone up in
price since we have came here. The
tradesmen know we are a lot of mugs with more money than brains, it is a large
city this Cairo much larger than Melbourne but is not so clean as Melb. You can get carriages motor cars tram cars or
donkeys to the camp or into town the motors are best here. There is no speed limit and they try to race
one another and go at a hell of a bat.
We got a tram back and it was so overloaded that when crossing the
points it ran off the line. So all the
soldiers got out and lifted it back on the line again and got in and came back
at a terrific bat. I didn’t feel safe
for she was swinging from side to side.
Exercising horses today we cant ride for 10 days so have to lead
them. One of our mares foaled last night
and it is a little beauty.

Monday December 14th
Very cold night. Beautifully fresh morning.
Strenuous work all day getting tents for Units, having some erected and getting
in stores and vehicles. It will take a few days to settle down. Majors King and
Rabett also Lt Olding called along to see me. I have not yet had time to look
at the old battery. Infantry are moving out in the mornings now to the
accompaniment of their Bands. Lecture tonight by Major Hughes on
"Artillery Tactics".
